The More I See, The More I Like. Sunday, January 24, 2010

WOW is all I can say today.

Today, following our Sunday Morning service, we didn’t have a very focused lunch.  Big boy needed to eat right away, which means he had peanut butter and jelly and an orange.  As I cooked lunch for the rest of us, Jeff settled on the third floor to rest a little bit (he is such a hard worker – he deserves rest).

After I completed cooking lunch, Jeff and I had our meal upstairs in our TV room (rare), while big boy napped.  Jeff and I were comfortable, but TD was nowhere to be seen.  We figured she might need a little space…

To our amazement – without our request at all – she took it upon herself to clean the dishes and counters from lunch preparation.  Then, when she arrived to the third floor, she brought me a hot tea.

I was thinking to myself, “Is this normal 14 year old behavior?”  I don’t remember doing things like this on my own initiative at that age.

And it sort of dawned on me…  She is starting to feel at home.  At least that is my take on it.  She might not be able to form the words “I like it here” yet, but she does know how to save me the hassle of cleaning the kitchen and to make my favorite tea.

As she wrote a paper the other day for her class, we were in the same room.  She asked me, “How does this sound?”  Later she handed me her paper, “Will you read this?”  And something cozy settled in my heart.  This is how it feels to build a relationship with a (tremendous) teen.

Sure, there will be bumps along the way – what relationship doesn’t have those?

Sure, this might be a honeymoon period (I HATE that phrase…Honeymoons are awesome and something to reflect on later…).

But, over here, in our little O’Farrell world, we are liking having this teen around!

    Dana,
How sweet! TD seems very special! I love the fact that when we are at church, she loves holding Gabriella and is very tenderhearted. You have a true gem in her! She seems to be blossoming every time I see her! What a blessing to have a TD that actually will clean up without being told! Sounds as though she is not taking you and Jeff for granted! I am excited to see what the Lord does in her life! She is a beautiful gift from God!

That’s amazing!! Sounds like she really is feeling “at home”. Maybe it was comforting for her too…..to be able to do things that “normal people” do when they’re at home….clean up the kitchen!
So happy to here she is settling in so well!
