first blog entry & great news! Monday, September 21, 2009

Today is the beginning of our story on this blog.  It is amazing to think that the whole story actually started before we were even born.  Just as it says in the Bible: God knew every plan He had for us while we were in our mother’s womb.  And, WOW, it was different than we thought it would be!

We planned to have children right away when J and I married over 5 years ago.  To our great disappointment, we lost 3 precious children in miscarriage and have experienced long stretches of infertility.

In this midst of our greatest storms, we did not realize God was taking our hand and leading us to our life destiny.  We wanted our own children (which we still pray will come), but God’s thoughts were for us to impact more than our own small world.

So, now to the good news!  We just found out today that we are officially certified Foster Parents! It was a long journey of applications, training, and more – but we have arrived to our official certification!

There are many emotions that come with this for sure.  Nervousness!!!!  To think that we are about to bring children into our home that we don’t know yet is overwhelming.  They will come to our home confused, not understanding why they can’t live with mom or dad or grandma or grandpa (or insert family title here)…  And in all this, we have to depend wholly on God to give us wisdom with our speech, time, and acts of kindness and love to these precious children.

We also feel great JOY!  The walls of our home need muddy hands to touch them.  The floors need running feet.  The rooms need to sound out loud with laughter of children.  And last not least, our hearts long to be a healing touch to the broken…  Whether it be a simple breakfast, song, or hug – we pray healing will come to all who pass through our home.

Looking for His hand in all things, J&D

Congratulations Jeff and Dana!!! We are so happy for you and know that the children who enter your home will be met with the love and compassion of our Lord through you. We will pray for healing and salvation for these children who come to you. God has a tremendous plan not only for these children whose lives you will touch, but for you who will be touched by these lives. May God grow your hearts as you reach out in love and grow your family as they begin to make handprints in your hearts and on your walls! We love you Jeff and Dana!

    Dana and Jeff,
My heart is overwhelmed with joy, my eyes are filled with tears, and my spirit leaps within me as I read and explore your blog. I’m so proud of you and Jeff, I am so encouraged this night as I read all the Lord is doing in your lives. Thank you. Thank you for pouring your heart out for us. Thank you for documenting your journey. Thank you for doing, what I feel to be, the most important ministry on earth, the raising up of children in the way they should go…You guys are awesome! I am only repeating what everyone already knows when I say that you guys are incredible parent and thank you for loving children. Thank you for giving a child a chance to rub his/her sticky fingers on a clean wall, dance around a living room to worship music, eat a healthy meal and eat yummy “junk” food. Thank you for giving them a chance to laugh, love & cry. Thank you for giving these little ones a chance…but most of all, thank you for leading many to Jesus and showing them what it means to live for Christ.
The Opatik’s love you guys. Your blog will be a daily read of mine from this day on.

We are so happy for you and Jeff. You are such a wonderful couple and the children who have the wonderful opportunity to stay in your home will be so blessed because of it. As a teacher, I too often see how negative/bad influences can impact a child. I’m so glad to hear that two of God’s precious children are going to impact children in a godly, loving way. You two are the perfect couple for such an awesome responsibility. Devin and I will continue to pray for you.

    Love,
    Cortney

Dana — Thank you so much for sharing this journey! I LOVE the name The Painted Dresser — such a sweet smart little personal touch — and my favorite line so far is: “The walls of our home need muddy hands to touch them.” That’s SO touching, gave m a big smile. It sounds to me like yours will be a home kids will feel loved in.

Hi Jeff and Dana! I am so happy you are sharing your journey with foster parenting. I have worked with foster children in behavioral health settings, and many of them need so desperately the love and Christian example you will give…I look forward to reading about your journey.
